Born in Perak, Dato’ Lewré Lew Fong Voon grew up in a rural area together with 15 siblings. He completed his Form 5 studies and immediately moved to Kuala Lumpur to continue his education. He worked part-time as a Salesperson to support his studies in Accounting. He excelled on the sales field and was head-hunted from one FMCG to another. In 1983, he moved from the FMCG industry to the shoe industry and was working in Ozly, selling the shoe brand; Fame. Although he was hired as a Sales Manager, Dato’ Lew grew fond of the shoe making processes. He spent a lot of time in the product development department, understanding the design process and technique to make gorgeous shoes. He was so passionate about the products sold that he became the top Sales Manager, year after year. At that juncture in 1987, a close friend in the industry invited Lew as a partner to start-up a new shoe trading company by the name of Roondy Sdn. Bhd. The big break came for Lew in 1991 when the Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Dato’ Seri Rafidah Aziz stood impressed by the quality of Dato’ Lew’s shoes and encouraged him to venture into the international market with the help of MATRADE. Roondy was launched into the international arena by exhibiting in the GDS Shoe Fair in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1991. News on Lew’s participation soon spread around quickly back in Malaysia, and there was an increasing demand for his shoe both locally and internationally. Finally in 1997, Dato’ Lew launched his self-name brand Lewré, fulfilling his long-term ambition to create his own brand. Since then, Lewré has worked with many other designers such as Eric Way (UK), Albert King (Malaysia), Kai (Thailand) and the brand has been featured in fashion runways around the world.
